FAQ

If you’re a first time home builder, then you won’t want to miss out on part two of our “Checklist for First-Time Home Builders.” We know that building your first home can be intimidating, so we’ve designed this comprehensive checklist to help you on your home building adventure. Congratulations! You’ve made it past the first phase of your home building experience. By now, you have set your budget, chosen your builder, and selected your location. Now, the real fun begins.

Meet with your building team.

Once you’ve selected a construction company, it’s time to meet your building team. These are the people who will be making your dream a reality, so it’s important to get to know them. Your building partner will likely choose the vendors and subcontractors who will be working on your project, so tap into their already existing relationships. The more familiar you are with your team, the more comfortable you’ll feel with handing over the reins to your home building project.

Visit your worksite.

While it can be counterproductive to hover over your worksite, you should feel free to visit it throughout the building process. Before building begins, sit down with your construction partner and plan out specific checkpoints. Some of these checkpoints can be over the phone or via email, but there should be some pre-determined times for you to come and see the worksite. There is no right or wrong timeline for checkpoints, so simply work with your building partner to establish a schedule that is comfortable for both of you. While a weekly check-in might be unnecessary, checking in after milestones such as a finished phase or room will help you ensure the project is moving along as you expect it to.

Provide feedback.

Feedback—both positive and negative—is necessary and helpful during the building process. Be mindful of the way that you deliver feedback. Be clear, concise, and specific about what you are saying so your builder knows exactly what you expect moving forward. Always treat your building team with respect. You’ll get far better responses if you speak calmly and rationally than you would if you were hasty and irate. The job of your construction crew is to make you happy; your job is to tell them how they can do so.

After

Your gorgeous dream home is completely finished—well, almost. Here are just a few more things to keep in mind for the months ahead. Don’t worry; you’ll be able to it from the comfort of your new home.

Do a final walk-through.

Before you and your family officially move into your new home, conduct a walk-through with your building partner. During this time, you can visually assess everything in your home as well as test out major features like faucets, appliances, and lighting. For a rundown, check out our article, “What to Expect at Your Final Home Walkthrough.”

Enjoy your new home.

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for—time to bask in the glory of your new home!

Keep in contact.

Your home will likely come with a variety of warranties, so stay in close contact with your builder if anything unexpected occurs. If there are any minor tweaks that need to be made, your building partner should work with you to address them.
